A friend gave us a hot tip about a farm in Marietta with a great sunflower field. We checked it out this morning, and it was fabulous.
The French word for sunflower is tournesol, and it is very apt. These flowers do turn dramatically toward the sun. It's impressive to see a whole field of them turned in the same direction.
The field was heavy with bees. Some flowers had a dozen or more on one bloom.
The sunflower buds are a beautiful shape, too.
After half an hour in the hot sun we retired to lunch in the cool and dark at Williams Hardware in Travelers Rest.
I had an egg salad sandwich on white bread and an apple gorgonzola salad. I haven't had an egg salad sandwich since I was eleven years old; I'd forgotten how good they are!
