Ever since my beloved Repper program changed hands and no longer supported Mac, I was on the lookout for another easy tiling program to introduce to my students. iOrnament fills the bill. Thanks to Janet Stollnitz for pointing this one out.
iOrnament is an app that runs on iPad, iPhone, and iPod. It features live drawing in repeat, in any of the seventeen basic symmetries. A single tile of the design can be saved, emailed, etc., and my favorite trick is to email a tile to myself and then tweak it in Photoshop on my desktop computer until it's weavable.
Here's a typical tile after size reduction to 40x80 pixels:
Here's a liftplan, shown sideways, with borders added, and satin weaves applied in Photoshop:
The center portion is repeated as desired for the central area of the dishtowel.
Here it is on the loom:
You saw this dishtowel here as the beginning border was being woven.
My early experience with this app is that it's a little buggy, but at the price—free—I can't complain. The Pro upgrade is 99 cents. Go ahead, splurge.
