New jacquard weavers love to weave photographs. This is understandable; the apparent sorcery in changing an image from shades of gray into cloth is irresistible. I wove a lot of photographs when I first got my TC-1; one of my favorites is this one, a 2003 adaptation of Bruce's photo of the neighborhood kids on our front porch in Durham, NC, in the late 1960's.
The weave structure is weft-backed satin. The warp (which runs from side to side in this piece) is mercerized cotton in natural, the weft black. The second weft is bleached white cotton, which shows up in the areas of bright highlights, including the feet as shown here. Click to enlarge.
Except for two of these children, who are my own, I have no idea where the rest of these folks are now. But every time I see the little feet, I have to smile.
