I am not Irish; but today I'm thinking of something that happened to me in my freshman year of college.
I had a bright green wool jumper, which looked something like this (my drawing is adapted from a Simplicity 1950's retro pattern, which would make it historically correct):
I got up early on the morning of March 17 because I had a full day of classes. I had totally forgotten that this was St. Patrick's day. I grabbed the jumper from my closet at random and got dressed and ran across campus to the dining hall and then to classes.
You can just imagine the hilarious comments directed my way that day by my classmates and professors. This very un-Irish girl of Eastern European descent had the chutzpah to wear a bright green jumper on St. Patrick's day.
In retrospect, that may have been the start of my enduring love for Celtic music. The jumper is long gone (after all, it had a 26" waist!) but the music remains.
