Site of Dogtown Cellar Hole

All that remains of the Dogdown settlers are cellar holes and their marker numbers. At some of the sites you can still see plantings of spring bulbs near the cellars. Here's the marker for number 18.

The Dogtown story is a fascinating one. If I weren't typing this on an iPad, I'd tell you more, honest! Google it for yourself. The Marsden Hartley connection is especially interesting.

I finally had a chance to see Dogtown, that infamous central heart of the Gloucester peninsula. It was downright beautiful, not spooky at all. Easy well marked hiking trails, with some comic relief at this green waste disposal site (spell checkers, anyone?).
