One thing I can always be certain of is that a 2/2 right facing twill makes a good selvedge, as long as the straight threading ascends 1,2,3,4, etc., starting from the left, and the shuttle is started from the left.
I wondered what would happen if I plugged in that selvedge at both sides of my 40-end straight draw, and then used the rest of the liftplan for other patterns. In this sketch, the blue represents the 2/2 twill. It also repeats across the web, as a vertical stripe.
I've used the rest of the liftplan for hollow circles in 3/1 straight twill with broken twill centers, on a background of straight 1/3 twill.
It all goes together OK, with no floats longer than 3. Here it is on the loom (since the warp is light and the weft dark, the dark and light pixels of the draft show up in reverse:

Well, after all that, I'll say that the experiment worked insofar as a good selvedge was achieved, but I find the rest of the design totally boring. Win a few, lose a few...
