Today I returned to one of my old favorites, a satin-based weft brocade. The ground cloth is plain weave and the brocade is based on an 8-end satin. Two satins are contrasted, 7/1 and 1/7. This warp is so closely sett that the 7/1 satin brocade (the one with the smallest amount of weft showing on the surface) doesn't really show at all, but in more open setts it would.
This is a good structure for showing off a fancy yarn, such as a multicolored handspun in this case. You can intersperse the brocade picks with two picks of plain weave, as in this example, or more picks as desired. Other structures could be used for the ground cloth as well.
This cloth would be good for wall hangings, pillows, bags, and clothing items that don't require much drape, such as vests. Max float length is 7 weftwise and 2 warpwise.
Here's a closer look at the structure. This is a photoshop weave simulation for 40 shafts & 24 picks.
