Ribbit

An appropriate activity for the New Year would be to recycle something old and useless into something new and useful. So here goes.

A sweater I knitted many years ago is ill-fitting and taking up valuable space in my bottom bureau drawer. A few days ago I got it out while watching football on TV and started frogging it. Ribbit! Ribbit!

After it was all ripped out I skeined the yarn on my kiddy-noddy and washed the skeins to relax the curlicues.

Then I wound it back into balls.

It's ready to knit up into something new. Or it may become a woven something. A new warp. Or weft.

Or it may sit for a while in its basket for a year or two until it is nicely aged, and inspiration strikes again.

We're not in a hurry around here.

Bindery Happenings

I have gone into bindery mode, at least for a while.

The recipient of this book seems to have enjoyed my experiment with a crossed strip binding.

The stitches are partially exposed on the spine. There are hidden kettle stitches at the top and bottom of the spine.

Endpapers were printed on a gel plate.

Coptic Stitching

Over the weekend I took a break from weaving and printed a huge stack of up cycled papers on the gel plate with found objects (odd stamping tools, puzzle pieces, etc.). I used these to cover some boards (also up cycled) and had a fine time sewing up these two coptic bound books. It feels so good to be working with books again. I really missed the practice. I love everything about making books—the tools, the materials, even the smell of glue.

There's always something appropriate in my button stash.

A good time this morning with the bread machine. It's cooling on the rack and still too warm to slice. I invented a new recipe and taste will tell. But I give it good marks so far for not having the dreaded dip in the middle and no ski slope either. Spoiler alert: it includes a tablespoon of cocoa powder.

Department of Books

Just finished reading The Chateau by William Maxwell. Not as wonderful as some of his others, but nevertheless worth reading. I love this author.

I may go to the bell ringing this evening. Or I may stay home and read.
