Half-Way Mark

Today was the fourth session of my 8-week tablet weaving class at OLLI, and something seems to have clicked. There were several "Aha!" moments, and all the students were able to put on their third warps, using the buddy system. Concentration was intense, and fortunately there was no repetition of last week's piano-tuning session outside our classroom door (a story for another day).

 

Kaye used a thicker yarn (blue) for one of the four warps in this circular-warped sample, and it has a lovely effect. I'll have to give it a try!

Conference Wrap-up (Short Version)

A Blurring of Outlines

After all the brouhaha about the weather, this is all that's left of our neighborhood snowman:

In the studio, I'm trying to move away from regularly repeating geometry, or at least the appearance thereof, with this result:

It's a 56-pick repeat, but it's not obvious at first glance. My map is just a rough sketch. Each square represents 4 tablets and four weft picks.

These bands are extremely addictive. I was so into the pattern that I clean forgot an appointment this afternoon.

 

Some Bands

A few little experiments on narrow bands. First the so-called Egyptian Diagonals (not really Egyptian, but certainly diagonal):

Now I'm going to venture out on the roads, even though school is closed again today. Be safe everyone, and be warm.

Bad Hair Woman

This is the fifth and final version of Bad Hair Woman. I performed some orthopedic surgery on her—shortened her arms and lengthened her legs—and I think her proportions are better. Maybe now she'll quit bothering me and let me sleep at night.

Transformations

I've recently been emboldened to draft my own patterns for double-faced tablet weaving. This female figure is one I'm working on.

Black and White

Weather Report

Yesterday morning it was so cold that I almost didn't weave, as I didn't want to venture outside to turn on the air compressor, but good sense prevailed and I got to work. The salamanders lampas piece was cut off and I took a quick & dirty photo on the studio floor.

In the afternoon, at OLLI, my nimble students put on their second tablet warps. They are quickly catching on to circular warping. Here Carol, Penny & Kaye are watching closely as Sandy warps her loom.

Midway through the afternoon we were startled to look out the windows and see snow falling. We all left class a little early in order to get home before the crazies got on the road. Snow in SC is usually not much of an issue, but the drivers are another matter…

Bad hair day.

A New Band

I found this scrap of notepaper buried in one of the stacks on my desk, and thought the draft had potential.

I warped it up over the weekend, and wove the first few inches.

It was my personal way of observing the solstice. 

New Classes

I've just posted two new classes on the sidebar. In January I'll be doing a tablet weaving class at OLLI. It will run once a week for eight weeks, with three hours per session.

In June I'll be offering a lampas seminar at Complex Weavers 2016. More information in the sidebar. 

 

 

Tying up Loose Ends

Call this cleanup day. i've been finishing up odd projects and clearing the decks (or looms, I should say) for new work.

First the towels: the last four were hemmed, pressed, and boxed.

Then I cleared off the inkle loom. This tablet woven project had a monochromatic warp, and the pattern interest came from switching rotation sequences. Subtle, but I think it's interesting. Click to enlarge.

The other day I mentioned pickup lampas. Thought you'd  like to see a picture of the forced shed for pickup. Very narrow, but with care, workable. You might want to enlarge this one too.
